AYO SRC Cashier project was created by Yada Ekidanta to transform the way small and medium-sized retailers in Indonesia run their business. The vision of the project was to provide these businesses with a technology-driven solution to reduce manual processes and improve speed to market and records tracking. The project started with a prototype design of a cashier application that provided key features such as barcode scanning, sales tracking, and receipt printing, which was made available on android devices and SUNMI POS machines. After a successful pilot, the app was launched to more than 300,000 users, bringing significant improvements to their checkout process.
Project Vision
Our company had a vision to grow and develop 300,000 small to medium sized retailers in Indonesia through technology. One key improvement that would benefit the retailers are speed to market and records tracking. Through a cashier app, we wanted to reduce manual business processes such as note taking and paper track recording.
Preliminary Ideation
During the ideation process, several key points became the main objective of this project: 1) Identify both user and business needs and propose a business solution. 2) Validate if offering users a point of sales system will help reduce their pain points. 3) Develop features that address the users pain points and gain traction in user sign up.
Early Prototype
We had designed a cashier application that provides key features such as barcode scanning, sales tracking and receipt printing based on interviews with users. The app is made to be available in several devices, which are android devices and SUNMI POS machines to increase more accessibility. We first launched the app limited to 100 participants to further learn their user experiences. Based on the pilot, we did another round of usability tests and interviews and gather some insights that could be further improved was the time of the scanning process and camera flash ability while scanning.
Business Issue
The main issue faced by small and medium-sized retailers in Indonesia was the burden of manual business processes such as note-taking and paper record tracking. These processes were not only time-consuming, but they also increased the risk of human error, leading to inaccuracies in record-keeping and financial reporting. The lack of a point of sales system was another major pain point for these retailers, leading to slow transaction times and potentially lost sales.
Business Solution
The AYO SRC Cashier app addressed these pain points by providing small and medium-sized retailers with a technology-driven solution to reduce manual processes and improve speed to market and records tracking. The app features cutting-edge machine learning technology that recognizes and records every product, making transactions faster and more accurate than ever before. The app is made to be available on several devices, which are android devices and SUNMI POS machines, to increase accessibility. The app has barcode scanning, sales tracking, and receipt printing features, which are essential for retailers. After usability tests and user research, technical improvements were made to the app, which included scanning with the camera flash for users situated in darker areas, leading to a successful launch to more than 300,000 users.
Benefits
The AYO SRC Cashier app has provided small and medium-sized retailers in Indonesia with a technology-driven solution to reduce manual processes and improve speed to market and records tracking. The app has barcode scanning, sales tracking, and receipt printing features, which are essential for retailers. The app’s technical improvements have led to a significant reduction in the time it takes to scan a product, and scanning with the camera flash has improved accessibility for users situated in darker areas. The app has been successfully launched to more than 300,000 users, providing them with a significant improvement in their checkout process.
Results
From the insights gathered during the previous usability tests and user research, our team brainstormed feasible technical improvements. Scanning a product now only takes less than a second and we have enabled scanning with the camera flash light for those users situated in a darker areas. This improvement has led to success during our app launch to more than 300,000 users.
